Position Summary

The primary responsibility for all positions with Beisswenger's Hometown Hardware is to WOW Every Customer Every Time and uphold the Core Values as determined by the management team. Lawn & Garden Associates are responsible for engaging the customer, determining their needs, projecting requirements, and maintaining the Lawn & Garden area with expertise in plants, soils, fertilizers, outdoor living, and seasonal merchandise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Help unload incoming trucks and put away Lawn & Garden merchandise, including plants, soils, mulch, fertilizers, and outdoor dcor.
• Maintain assigned department: keep indoor and outdoor garden areas clean, organized, fully stocked, and ensure plants are healthy through proper watering, pruning, and rotation.
• Execute daily operational priorities assigned by management, displaying a Speed is Life attitude. Move with urgency while maintaining attention to detail.
• Cooperate with others and work well as part of the retail team; actively participate in daily huddles and share ideas for department improvement.
• Update and remove promotional tags/signage as required, ensuring Lawn & Garden sales events and flyers are current.
• Restock displays, end caps, and seasonal features (soil stacks, fertilizer, patio sets, etc.).
• Handle special orders for non-stock Lawn & Garden items. Follow the two associates to say no standard before declining customer requests.
• Deter shoplifting through excellent customer service and adherence to store policy.
• Provide the best possible experience for Every Customer, Every Time by being helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly about Lawn & Garden products.
• When not with a customer, remain visible in main aisles or Lawn & Garden areas to anticipate customer needs.
• Serve customers in the Lawn & Garden department and storewide, offering advice on plant care, lawn products, pest control, and outdoor living solutions.
• Demonstrate the WOW process in all customer interactions.
• Actively participate in store communication and initiatives (e.g., Communication Board, Daily Huddle, store contests).
• Assist customers with simple complaints/concerns and escalate to management when necessary.
• Use the Five Foot Rule: greet and/or acknowledge all customers within five feet.
• Be polite, attentive, and proactive; make eye contact, smile, and never avoid a customer.
• Promote Ace Rewards, describe the Ace Helpful Promise(s), and use the Magic Question.
• Maintain awareness of all Lawn & Garden promotions and advertisements.
• Always wear your radio and headset to effectively communicate with team members.
• Respond to Customer Coordinator questions as needed.
• Assist customers with loading heavy or bulky Lawn & Garden items (e.g., bags of soil, mulch, planters).
• Offer customers a red basket or cart when appropriate.
• Assist in the training and development of peers, particularly in Lawn & Garden knowledge and best practices. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Able to communicate professionally with customers and team members.
• Skilled at providing prompt, friendly, and attentive customer service.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, especially in maintaining plant health and product displays.
• Willingness to learn Lawn & Garden product knowledge, including plants, soils, fertilizers, pest control, and seasonal dcor.
• Team player with proven reliability.
• Knowledge and experience in Lawn & Garden retail strongly desired.
• Continuous pattern of regular and prompt attendance is required.
• Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and peak seasonal hours (spring and summer).

Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods, walk, reach, and bend to perform job duties.
• Ability to lift and move merchandise up to 50 pounds (e.g., soil, fertilizer, mulch).
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions to maintain garden areas and assist customers.
• Perform all functions as required for Lawn & Garden and general store duties.
